Model metrics to help you develop strong performance measures
About the Metrics Bank

The Walton Family Foundation’s Metrics Bank is an interactive online repository of more than 300 customizable “model metrics.” These metrics reflect the breadth of the foundation’s work, from our investments in new cultural institutions and schools to our support for community organizing work and fisheries improvement projects. The “model metrics” were derived from actual performance measures established by grantees over two years. We hope the Metrics Bank will help streamline the process of developing strong performance measures.

Note, grant metrics shown in the Metrics Bank should be viewed as examples rather than as a definitive or exhaustive list. Program staff may adapt these metrics or create new metrics as appropriate to a particular grant or program context.

Our Approach to Performance Measurement

The foundation’s philanthropic approach draws from our mission, vision, and values. We have a long-standing commitment to strategic philanthropy, including both structured planning as well as evaluation and learning. This approach informs all of our grantmaking strategies and efforts to learn from our work and the work of our grantees. By embracing this approach, we aim to hold ourselves accountable for achieving short-term goals and ensure progress toward longer-term, sustainable outcomes. Grant evaluation is an important component of this approach, and performance measures are the backbone of grant evaluation. Performance measures are statements that describe the direct products and services delivered by a program (outputs) as well as the impact of those products and services (outcomes).

Performance measures identify:

  1. WHAT will change or be accomplished through the program
  2. WHO will create the change or accomplishment
  3. WHEN the change or accomplishment will occur
  4. HOW MUCH change will occur or what the level of accomplishment will be
  5. HOW WE WILL KNOW the change occurred (what evidence you will provide)

The Metrics Bank provides more than 300 sample metrics that you can customize to reflect the nature of your work.
